Coordinating care across mental health and substance use services reflects treating the whole person when there are co-occurring disorders. When care is integrated, clinicians share assessments, align goals, and develop a single plan that addresses mood and other mental health symptoms together with substance use challenges. This approach recognizes that symptoms and cravings influence each other, so addressing one without the other often leads to partial recovery or relapse. For example, someone with depression and alcohol use disorder may find that alcohol worsens mood and therapy becomes less effective unless both areas are treated together; an integrated plan combines psychotherapy, appropriate medications, and recovery supports in a coordinated way, improving adherence and outcomes. Practical implementation includes interdisciplinary teams, shared records when privacy allows, regular case conferences, and warm handoffs so a patient doesn’t fall through the cracks. Waiting for a patient to request coordinated care places the burden on them and can delay needed treatment; treating addiction in isolation from mental health care misses how these conditions interact; and focusing only on medication management neglects therapy, coping skills, and social supports that sustain recovery. The integrated, coordinated approach is the most effective way to address co-occurring disorders and support lasting recovery.
